USB 3.1 - 10 Gbps Throughput and Lightning Fast Charging

15.12.2016

As its name suggests, SUPERSPEED+ USB increases the data transfer rate from 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps! This makes USB 3.1 twice as fast as USB 3.0 and on par with 1st gen Thunderbolt technology.

Also, USB 3.1 offers a boost in power of up to 100 Watts, which means that it will charge your devices much faster!  Plus, negotiation of power allows two devices to decipher which one will power the other and the power direction can be changed without switching the physical cable direction saving time. USB 3.1 is also backward compatible with previous versions of USB back to version 2.0.

With USB 3.1, charging becomes easier than ever with the Type-C connector with its simple, reversible design that takes the guess work and frustration out of plugging in your USB devices. The smaller and slimmer Type-C connector will replace both full-sized USB connectors as well as micro-USB connectors, though there will be USB 3.1 cables that are backward compatible with existing USB 3.0 ports.

Another feature present with the new USB 3.1 standard is DisplayPort over USB. VESA, working along with the USB-IF, is announcing that they are publishing the "DisplayPort Alternate Mode on USB Type-C Connector Standard." This standard will allow USB Type-C connectors and cables to carry native DisplayPort A/V signals.

USB 3.1 is coming to market as a single-cable solution supporting video, audio, data and power.  With this super-charged USB delivering more speed, more power and a sleeker, fool-proof design, USB is likely to remain the de-facto interface connecting your devices for a long time to come.
