The European Space Agency (ESA), the Aeronautics and Space Agency (ALR/FFG) and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure are jointly supporting an Austrian consortium in developing an innovative satellite communication technology set to establish new standards. The project, named Multibeam Ka-band Satellite User Terminal (MUKAS), is funded under ESA’s ARTES 4.0 (CustomSatGround) Core Competitiveness programme.

The consortium partners are JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Graz), S+K Consult and the Viennese high-tech company and antenna specialist PIDSO – Propagation Ideas & Solutions GmbH.

At the heart of the project is a novel multi-orbit satcom user terminal optimised for use with all common satellite constellations: GEO (geostationary orbit), MEO (medium Earth orbit) and LEO (low Earth orbit). The terminal will deliver very high data rates and reliability. Thanks to its modular design and low profile, it is also suited to a wide range of applications, from ground-based installations to mobile platforms.

The project is currently in a multi-stage development process. It brings together scientific excellence, hands-on engineering and close collaboration between research and industry. For Austria, it marks a technological milestone, both in terms of international visibility and in strengthening the country’s expertise in space technology.

As a specialist in high-performance antennas and wireless communication, PIDSO contributes its long-standing expertise from aviation, the automotive industry and research. The company stands for custom, high-performance antenna solutions that perform reliably in the harshest conditions. “We are very proud to be taking the next technological leap in satellite radio technology together with ESA. This cooperation is a great honour and a strong motivation for us,” says DI Dr. Christoph Kienmayer, Managing Director of PIDSO. PIDSO has been part of the Riedel Group, headquartered in Wuppertal, Germany, since 2017.

Founded in 1975, ESA is Europe’s central space organisation.
